"Episcopalians are Catholics with taste"

Question:

Long ago, when I first started going to Episcopal services, I was told by a former Anglican monk that in the U.S. anyway, "Episcopalians are Catholics with taste." Anybody want to weigh in on the relative merits of that statement?

Partially true once upon a time; however, with the advent of the dreaded "praise bands" even into Episcopalian sanctuaries, the pressure to adopt low-church Prot usages and customs, and the growing tendency to jettison historical Christian beliefs, the claim is no longer compelling. — Matthew Weber Curatorial Assistant Music Library University of California, Berkeley A word spoken in due season, how good is it!  The Holy Bible (The Old Testament):  _The Proverbs_ 15:23

Response:

For a long time I thought Catholic bishops  really wanted to be episcopalians . You know married able to allow almost any kid of silliness in the liturgy  and yet clam to be apostolic . I think even with the sex scandal Catholic bishops are content, they aren’t episcopalian .

The operative phrase is "long ago". — Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7734/stevesig.htm E-mail – see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk

Interesting. Can you expand on this?

Response:

Won’t wash.  Consider their very notorious Archbishop Laud, sir, did HE have any _taste_ worth mentioning?  Contrast plebeian Laud with his royal Master, did Charles I have any taste?  Silly question! Chuck I Stuart had very exquisite tastes, but did he ever flirt with Rome because of his French wife or his "Arminian" archbishop or his aesthetics?  Not at all. Chuck II Stuart on the other hand — who knows for sure to this day all about _his_ flirtations?  Chuck II was bound and determined that Jimmy II should inherit, and his reasons can hardly have been altogether aesthetic and tasteful, and … NOT AT ALL!
