Question:
oh… and they weren’t all wildly popular here- in any way whatsoever! SK Go and buy DIFFERENT CLASS too!‰
Response:
Most of the talk regarding Britpop focuses on obvious favorites, like Radiohead, Blur, and Oasis (who I think suck!). All of the albums below were also wildly popular, at least in GB. But you know those fickle Brits — can’t trust that their flavor of the month has any lasting nutrition. Except for bits of Pulp, Verve and Auteurs, I haven’t heard any of these. Anyone have any recommendations or warnings? Mansun * Attack Of The Grey Lantern (Parlophone) 97
Fantastic debut album. Very prog-influenced and orchestral pop. Yes, ama regulars, I picked this one up again, cheap. Super Furry Animals * Fuzzy Logic (Creation) 96
Can’t go wrong with SFA. This and Radiator are two fine pop albums. Proof that Wales is cranking out some mighty fine music. — In My CD Changer/Stereo: Techno Animal vs. Reality Ground Zero – Consumation Rufus Wainwright – s/t

Average: Crowded House * Temple Of Low Men (Capitol) 88
Average? This is one of the best albums of the 80’s and notches right behind ‘Woodface’ as far as Crowded House goes. Easily the best Beatles album they never recorded. — In My CD Changer/Stereo: Techno Animal vs. Reality Ground Zero – Consumation Rufus Wainwright – s/t

Wow, a double reversal. Very difficult manuever! I’ll give it a 9.4. Eb
Response:
(although I’d prefer if you called it INDIE!!!) Thanks! The ratings were very helpful. I can’t call it indie in good conscience, as most of them are on major labels, and most of the albums hit the top 10 in Britain, even if it was only briefly. Still doesn’t change what the music is! I have Elastica and the last two Pulp albums, but thanks for the recommendations. Tell us more about these — – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – That do you……. Boo Radleys * Giant Steps (Columbia) 93 "Wake Up!" was better. Still they never make bad records.
Ignoe the above comment. Wake Up , although an excellent album of it’s type (an attempt by Martin Carr to write hits – he succeeded) is not better than Giant Steps. Giant Steps is the Boo Radleys best album so far and IMO the best album released by a British band in the last decade.
Response:
Wake Up Boo!- no thankyou…. You try living in a house full of student types, who thought the funniest joke all summer was to sing this song in your ear every morning…… to get you up… No, Boo Radleys…… NO!!!! Swirl Girl ‰

I would have to disagree. My Bloody Valentine’s ‘Loveless’ is the best British album of the 90’s so far, IMO. — In My CD Changer/Stereo: Amp – Sirenes Global Communication – 76:14 Rufus Wainwright – s/t

I would rate them about equal. _Loveless_ has an astonishing, dense sound that was extremely influential. _Giant Steps_ has superior *songs* and is one of the more diverse pop records in recent memory. They’re both classics. Jeff Troutman NP: Codeine – Frigid Stars

And you are entitled to your opinion. I find Loveless a bit repetitive though and although 2 of my favourite MBV tracks are on Loveless (When You Sleep & Sometimes) I find Isn’t Anything a better record. Who do you think the best British band of the 90s are ? I think The Boo Radleys win for their sheer consistency and variation over the decade. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

and speaking of mr. yorke, you were dead-on with the comparison. this was being played at the record store the other day. except he sounds like whiny thom. i think i heard the whole album played. didn’t grab me really. peace…fred (np: todd rundgren, "couldn’t i just tell you?")

Did Persi compare Rufus Wainwright to Thom Yorke?? Jeeeeeesus. So what, anyone who likes to sing sustained notes with a bit of vibrato now sounds like Thom Yorke? No, sorry. Yorke has that always annoying messiah-complex inherent to his singing, which isn’t found in Rufus Wainwright at all. Totally different vibe. Heck, Wainwright isn’t even an "alternative" artist. My favorite British band of the decade? I dunno, does Stereolab count, or are we calling them French? Otherwise, it’d between Blur, Oasis, Teenage Fanclub and Spiritualized for me. Eb

Catherine Wheel. Five albums in the 90’s and all of them are great. Both Radiohead and The Boo Radleys had false starts before reaching their current pinnacles. Jeff Troutman NP: Codeine – Frigid Stars

I really dig the production. Very orchestral (then again, it was produced by Van Dyke Parks). Lots of violins, strings and his voice is a real killer. It’s a pretty good debut album. Grabs you after a while. — In My CD Changer/Stereo: Prince – Dreams: Outtakes 1982-1997 Kid Spatula – Spatula Freak Rufus Wainwright – s/t

No. Freddy Mercury did the same thing and doesn’t sound like Yorke at all. Rufus actually sounds like Yorke. I’m not the only one who thinks this. One of the KCRW DJ’s compared his sound to that of a more simplistic and majestic Radiohead (direct quote). One of the people at one of the local record stores I shop at didn’t like the album because, quote: ‘he sounds too much like the Radiohead singer’ and when I played the CD for one of the guys I work with, he thought he was listening to Radiohead. Face it….there’s a big similarity and plenty of people have picked up on it. Still a fantastic album, though (perfect companion piece for OK Computer). — In My CD Changer/Stereo: Prince – Dreams: Outtakes 1982-1997 Kid Spatula – Spatula Freak Rufus Wainwright – s/t

It needs a few spins to really sink in, but once it does, you realize what a great album it is. Their new one (Radiator) I hear is even better.
It is. Maybe someone will pity us poor Americans and release it here.

I don’t consider ‘Pablo Honey’ a false start, but a really good debut album. I mean Creep? Anyone Can Play Guitar? Lurgee? You? Stop Whispering? All great songs. even some of their old b-sides from Pablo era are fantastic. — In My CD Changer/Stereo: Prince – Dreams: Outtakes 1982-1997 Kid Spatula – Spatula Freak Rufus Wainwright – s/t

*Two* songs are co-produced by Jon Brion and VD Parks. The other tracks are produced solely by Brion. GB
