Pardon, Introductions are in order

Question:

How rude of me! Here I’ve been posting to the group since April, and I’ve never introduced myself! Well, I’ll set this right! Greetings and Most Warm Felicitations! I’m Augustus! Auguste is the appropriate form of address, but I’ll accept Augustus, even Augie (don’t overdo it though, and forget about Gus!). My name is Bob Lotfinia, I’m seventeen years-old (June 23), non-denominational Christian  (leaning towards RCC of late, though). Live in Tampa Bay area in Florida. If you can’t tell by my screen name, I’m a lover of all things Roman (esp. the Empire). No, my views on Roman Catholic Chruch aren’t biased due to my love of Latin/Rome (well, maybe a little). Love good conversation. Inquiries welcome. — Augustus Bart Simpson: " Well, I’d hate to tell the top cop how to do his job." Chief Wigum: "No, please, it’s the *only* way I’ll learn." Now no one can say I conceal my identity!

The legate Stephanus Antonius to the Imperator Caesar Divi Filius Augustus, Ave: To wit a confession is in order on my part. I was initially drawn to Roman Catholicism for the same reason….at least it was "Roman". Heck I was able to hear Latin used! There is nothing on earth (for me) like sitting and listening as the mysteries of Christianity are revealed in the most beautiful language ever developed. From "Judica Me, Deus, fortitudo mea quare me repulisti, et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?" to "In principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum…ET VERBUM CARO FACTUM EST et habitavit in nobis: et vidimus gloriam ejus, gloriam quasi Unigeniti a Patre, plenum gratiae et veritatis". Gives me goose pimples! I’m more a fan of the Republic than the Principate….but above all…the legions. Never before or since have so few… Steve

Much goodness snipped. Do you two Romaphiles know about the website devoted to Nova Roma?  It’s vaguely pagan in outlook, but you might enjoy it anyway!  Grin…. — janet Sic friatur crustum dulce

E Mente Imp Caesaris Divi Julii F August to Legatus Stephanus Antonius My first real experience with Catholic liturgy in Latin had been Shubert’s Mass in E-flat Major. I was able to understand the words the sang because of the little booklette thingie. Needless to say, I fell in love with the musical setting of the Mass! Ever since, I have collected Mozart’s Coronation Mass (lovely) and Bee’s Missa Solemnis (mmh…). The liturgy really helped sharpen my Latin reading abilites, which came in handy with the AP Vergil course. I also have a CD of gourgeous Rennaisance pieces (I _adore_ Tomas Luis Victoria!), in which a found a prayer (?) that exemplifies my faith in God (Psalm 30: 1-2)*. Ah… Latin. I’m more a fan of the Republic than the Principate

Ah… the legions… wrote a great research paper on the legions for my English term paper this year. Got an A. Yes, visited Nova Roma. Wery, wery interstink, ja? "Vaguely pagan"? A lot more like it. Don’t like how they distribute the provinces. The music … That was a major attraction..A good classical "Gloria" can send me into shock. As an aside, I used the soundtrack of "The Lion in Winter" …primarily Carmena Burina (Orff) remixed with the rest of the "record" (ever heard of those?) for a speech class recitation of "Horatius at the Bridge". After the shock wore off my professor (look I’m sorry, it was incredible), He asked me "Since when did the Romans have aristocratic British accents?". You had to be there, but there’s something about the combination of excellent music and incredible poetry that forces the mouth to do things it normally wouldn’t or couldn’t. I spent the entirety of High School aquiring and painting an entire legion of miniature soldiers with artillery and cavalry (Atlantic Miniatures, now defunct)….and then LOST the whole army in a move…just like Varus. I’ve since started getting "Foundry" figs to replace the fallen troops and go on a rescue mission. (grin…I’m not quite out of touch with reality). But I’ve finally convinced my wife to let me build "Split" when our older generations eventually depart this earth. Steve

It isn’t Latin (German, in fact), but I’m quite a GREAT fan of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
