was Mary a virgin?

Question:

Are you a troll?  Of all the Christian forums, why was this one selected?

Maybe because Mary plays a very important part in the Catholic Church? — Yohan the Lost Royal Archiver for Blessed Eris www.POEE.org

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – can someone explain to me how Mary could have been a virgin if she was married to Joseph?  Didnt they have sex? How old was she when she gave birth to Jesus? How does anyone know she was a virgin, and why would/did anyone believe her that she was when she became pregnant? Why was Mary specifically chosen from any other Jewish woman to give birth to God’s son? Did Mary have any kids prior or after giving birth to Jesus? Was Joseph much older than her? Why did Mary and Joseph have to go on a long trip when she was pregnant for the census when the census taker comes to people’s homes? Why wasnt Jesus married by age 32? Average life expactancy was 35. People back then got married in their teens. Are you a troll?  Of all the Christian forums, why was this one selected? Peace Jose <}}}<

I don’t know if these questions are sincere, or if they are only a trollwork. I suppose you are looking for the truth, but you are some kind afraid of something so pure as offering to God one’s own virginity. Why should I refuse such a great thing like sex? Is there anything so important that sex is a little lose for reaching it? The church response is Yes, it is, sex is good (if you respect God’s rules) but virginity is also good, and may bring you to a bigger happines  (bigger than the best orgasm on earth).

The tradition tells that the decision of virginity was consensual, Mary and Joseph made this vow together, they were people who were looking for the highest goal (the "sexless" one). Bible tells clearly that Mary was virgin when Jesus was born. And joseph was a righteous man, who respected god’s will, a rare kind of man, and personally, I expect from such kind of man a special understanding of what is really happening, His, and Your God was born by his wife. His wife was "terribly" sacred. The tradition tells us that Mary spent his childhood in the temple, praying and studying the Word of God, and knowing him in a special way. She was "prepared" to become the mother of the Messiah. And the few passages of the Gospels in which she appears give a good testimony of that. Why did Mary and Joseph have to go on a long trip when she was pregnant for the census when the census taker comes to people’s homes?

To survive, and to save Jesus (when he was a little child) from  Herod (I don’t know if it is written correctly) Read Mattew 2,13 . Why wasnt Jesus married by age 32? Average life expactancy was 35. People back then got married in their teens.

Did everyone marry at the age of Jesus Christ? I think in every age someone marries, someone doesn’t. And Jesus had good arguments not to marry. He chose for himself the virginity, and the consacrated life, he wants all of us as his brothers, You too, and not asking about this, not very useful, topics. May God give you light, and fill you with His love, his tenderness, and give a true meaning to your life. In Jesus Christ. Seb.

How does anyone know she was a virgin, and why would/did anyone believe her that she was when she became pregnant? They don’t, and they didn’t. Personally, I’ve always liked the "She was knocked up by a Roman Soldier" story of what really happened. Why was Mary specifically chosen from any other Jewish woman to give birth to God’s son? Maybe she wasn’t. Maybe it’s all just stories. You’d flip if you knew how many "gods" were born of virgins before Jesus was even a sparkle in that Roman’s eye. Did Mary have any kids prior or after giving birth to Jesus? Prior would have been a neat trick if we’re to believe what we’re told about her virginity. As for after, there are verses in the Bible that seem to indicate that Jesus had siblings. There are also some biblical arguments that seem to indicate that he didn’t. It’s a mess…just like you’d expect to find if it were authored by the hands of umpteen humans, rather than coming straight from God. Was Joseph much older than her? Couldn’t tell you. Why did Mary and Joseph have to go on a long trip when she was pregnant for the census when the census taker comes to people’s homes? That’s not the way it used to be. Why wasnt Jesus married by age 32? Average life expactancy was 35. People back then got married in their teens. Maybe he was really freaking ugly. Or maybe just make believe. Or maybe he spent so much time touring that he didn’t have time for anything other than groupies. Or maybe he was married to Mary Magdalene as has been suggested. As for the "virgin" thing, why not ask a Rabbi? It’s -his- religion, after all…I think it’s safe to assume that he knows what he’s talking about. Go to the source, or as near to it as you can get. Remember, the Jews weren’t expecting their messiah to be born of a virgin. That was added on to make Jesus as impressive as any number of other "gods" floating around at the time. [snip] An entire religion is based on a man who may not have existed.

At first blush this seems a more fundamental question than Mary’s virginity. What evidence do you require to believe in a historical figures existence? Why not try a well-respected expert in ancient history first? Michael Grant takes a methodologically naturalist approach in "Jesus, an Historian’s Review of the Gospels", so you should be comfortable with him. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0684818671/qid= 1034792106/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4927773-6040922?v=glance)                                                              If it could be proven Moses or Abraham or Mohammed never existed, what would the believers’ reaction be?

*Doubting* the existence of a historical figure is one thing, *proving* they didn’t exist is entirely another. That’s probably equivalent to proving a negative in logic. In other words, not worth the effort. — Truth prevails for those who live in truth.                                                      Charter 77 Movement

Jesus had four brothers: James, Jude (Judas!), Simon, James/Jude are named from the foundrs of the sect who wrote those books — Jesus’ brothers.

In hebrew culture there was only one word to tell either "brother" either "cousin". This is not a valid argument to tell Christian tradition is wrong. Have you got other arguments, confirming this?

In alt.religion.christian.roman-catholic (and doubtless elsewhere), on (Developwebsites) brought the total lines of text written about  "Re: was Mary a virgin?" to 10. I decided to observe the following about them: Who is Jesus to you, if anyone? An entire religion is based on a man who may not have existed.  If it could be proven Moses or Abraham or Mohammed never existed, what would the believers’ reaction be?
