What is a Troll, Toad etc ?

Question:

Troll and such are the terms the protectors of the faith

Troll is a usenet term.  Some who have faith in the great anarchical experiment of usenet do in fact try to defend their "faith" by treating trolls like roaches, and stepping on them until they go "crunch". I am a troll. Happy to be of service.

You are a relatively happy-go-lucky sort of troll.  Still, you have fallen for the seductive allure of the grammatical fiction, and hence you have rent the fabric of the Usenet.  Therefore, trolls like you threaten to destroy the Usenet by abusing the freedom of anarchy.   Don’t take it personally, but you must be eradicated. To go down in flames while admitting your error is the last service the Usenet will ask of you. Dave, the Sentimental Neanderthal

Response:

You missed the Point.  There really are no JW’s on the JW NG.  They don’t go in there.  They go to people who are not enlightened to the Truth about Jesus.

No, ~you~ missed the point.  It was: "Go away.  You are satan-deluded sap, AND a descpicable Usenet troll.  Your un-Biblical lies and heresies are not welcome here, and neither is your invidious trolling.  If you want to be a Christian, shut-up, listen, and learn.  If you want to follow the JW garden path to Hell, then do it somewhere else."  NOW do you get the point, Sherwood? Dave

Oh, my guess is that you have more than your fair share of SDA and fundie trolls working your ng too; and then there’s the fruits of cross-posting mania.  But my point is that there are probably no Catholics trolling your ng.  Take the hint, and return the favor.  The Usenet is a precious commodity in the world of free-speech.  Like with all free speech, we ourselves have to protect it by self-policing ourselves. Lighten up.  The bible clears the thinking. Agreed.  But it helps to have a real Bible.  The NWT is a pious fraud. Dave

Troll and such are the terms the protectors of the faith use against those who confront them with the mind boggling impossibilities of the tenets of Christians fantasies and delusions which have been promulgate by the Holy See since it took over the mantle of the Roman Empire.

That’s nonsense.  Troll is a uunet term, I’ve already defined it.  If I went into the alt.atheism and started making a lot of posts about how evil atheism is I’d be trolling there.  The same if I went into the pro abortion forums and started talking about how every abortion is a legalized murder. It’s also a matter of R.E.S.P.E.C.T.  Some people simply do not care about the members of the forum they are posting to.  If I were to post to alt.athiesm, I really should, as a matter of courtesy, respect that there are going to be atheists in that forum, that it is THEIR FORUM, not mine.  I don’t post to alt.atheism of course, but I do post to alt.religion.christian.eastern-orthodox.  I don’t preach about the Catholic Church in that forum, because that is not what the forum is about.  If misinformation occurs in the forum about a specific Roman Catholic Church teaching, I will in humility inform them of the correct information. If we were as you would have us, we would not be calling you trolls. Instead, we would throw a carrot over your nose, claim that you turned us into a newt (but we got better), test you by comparing your weight to that of a duck on a set of highly crooked scales, and then burn you at the stake, or with a steak, medium rare, with a bernase sauce. I think in your case, they mean the troll that hung out under the bridge when the three billy goats were crossing.

Response:

Greetings, I notice the very good decorum of Catholics on this site.  When confronted by opposition, they called the oppresser, Troll, Toad and the like. Well you see its really a reflection of themselves, born out of eternal guilt. After all the Church has been trolling the lives of world citizens sinse its advent 1700 years ago. Statistically the results are now part of history..by their fruits we shall know them.

How about the following fruits Peter? To start with, all the saints that helped those in need. (Especially the poor.) The nuns and sisters that served as nurses throughout the centuries. The brothers and priests that performed agricultural research that let to many of the advances in farming and food processing. The brothers/priests/nuns that preserved many of the ancient manuscripts by copying them by hand. All the Catholic parents that raised good upstanding law abiding Christian children throughout the centuries. The Catholics that stood up against all the dictators in the past centuries.  (Especially in the past century.) All the Catholic councilors that helped people to heal their pain. Most of the above is/was done for free.  It is not spectacular and so does not get as much press as the political entanglements that some people have dragged the Catholic Church into. May God lead us to a fuller understanding of His truth and may His peace go with you. — 1 Peter 3:8-15 [8] Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love of the brethren, a tender heart and a humble mind. [9] Do not return evil for evil or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing.  [10] For "He that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile; [11] let him turn away from evil and do right; let him seek peace and pursue it. [12] For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those that do evil." [13] Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is right? [14] But even if you do suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,  [15] but in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence;

Well, you see, Sherwood, we can’t call them the names they call us (too often obscene and unfit for public use), so most of us try to be a little milder.  It might be interesting for you to ask the users of obscenities why they use the terms they do. Spamming, in uunet terms, is a variant of trolling in which a huge number of threads are posted not to cause reactions on them, but to flood the system with so many irrevalent messages the real ones get lost in the bandwidth.

Interesting.  Should we distinguish between "spamming" and "jamming".  I think what you are describing is what occurs in the scientology ng, which is an attempt to snuff out any and all discussion by increasing the noise-to-signal ratio.  I often, personally, think of usenet spamming as falling into several categories, all revolving around extensive cross-posting, to include: 1, Commercial spamming of ads for free money or urls. 2, Trolling for flames by posting controversial material into potentially adverserial ngs; e.g., "God hates lesbians" posts into the gay, gay politics, tv.xena, fundie Christian, Catholic, and atheist forums all at once, with the purpose of provoking a giant usenet flame-war. When confronted by opposition, they called the oppresser, Troll, Toad and the like. You have been called a Troll, because you are a Troll.  No one, to my knowledge, has called you an "oppressor" or "Toad", largely because such terms are void of meaning in the Usenet context.  Since you claim to make your living by some sort of internet services, I do not believe for one second that you are so naive as NOT to know what a Usenet Troll is.  If you really don’t know, go back and read the general FAQ’s for Usenet. Hi Christopher :-) Thank you for helping me out.  I love to learn and in turn, will follow your example. Peace to you :-) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I notice the very good decorum of Catholics on this site.  When confronted by opposition, they called the oppresser, Troll, Toad and the like. Troll is actually a uunet term.  It comes from the verb not the noun. A troll is someone who trolls, which comes from a fishing expression which means to drag many lines behind the boat in the hopes that some fish will bite on one of more of them.   Of course the fisherman hopes that only one line bites at a time, but murphy’s law is not in his court. In uunet, trolls are those who post in opposition forums with a varitey of subjects in general opposition to the forum (the bait) in the hopes to get some person in the forum (the fish) to bite.  These posts also tend to use emotional methods of debate, as opposed to more rational methods of debate.  They are also structured to encite strong opinion, after all they want people to "bite" on them. For example, someone who posts a large number of posts in the microsoft windows forum that state that linux is the true operating system and that windows has so many flaws it might as well be named walls with holes in them, is definitely trolling the windows forum. Now for the matter of a Toad.  I have no idea. Incidentally the email equivalent of a troll is a spammer.  Spamming, in uunet terms, is a variant of trolling in which a huge number of threads are posted not to cause reactions on them, but to flood the system with so many irrevalent messages the real ones get lost in the bandwidth.  There appears to be few (if any) spammers on alt.religion.christian.roman-catholic. — Peace & Good!
