To Robin ?

Question:

Thanks, Frans. However, I wasn’t attempting to "correct" you. I was addressing the theological issue, which fundamendmentalists here in the U.S., at least, often ignore, while attacking masterbation as a sin. I did not doubt you bibical knowledge. I have a old friend I’ve not seen in 12 years who is (was?) a pastor in Amsterdam and who is one of the most knowledgable biblical scholars I know. Part of my own denomination’s heritege is the Reformed church in Holland. I like the phrase "leaving the church before the choir sings!" Now, if I could just get my congregation to have a choir! For me it’s the theological exegesis which is most important. And, theolgical interpretations changes with time and place, even though the scriptures remain basically the same. Ah, I correct that: in Christianity the Hebrew and Greek texts remain fairly consistent. The translations change depending upon whose doing the translating. Thanks again for the feedback. I truly enjoy theological discussions! Shalom, my friend. Hi Nick, Thank you for correcting me or trying to keep things straight. Do you realise that these kind of differences are now nearly 4000 years the cause for all different religions and streaming within a religion? I know the bible quite well, as I owe a Roman Catholic, a Dutch protestant, a Jewish (in Hebrew AND Dutch), a Mormon bible and a Koran (in Dutch), and read them all. With the threat with Robin I spoke about "Onan was punished, because he spread his seed down to earth ( in Holland this is called "leaving the church before the choir sings")". For you it is more important what happened before that in the holy book and for others it is just a story, not important at all, as there are many stories in the bible, not really important at all, just history. I am pleased to call a person of such knowledge my friend. Remember: the point of the story was not about the sex act! Onan was punished because (1) he didn’t follow instructions (the purpose for screwing his brother’s wife — and (2) his own greed — he "knew that the heir would not be his." Sorry Robin, if I had it wrong, but I promised to look it up. There was no book of Onan, but just a story. Genesis, Chapter 30, verses 8-10. And Judah said to Onan, "Go into your brother’s wife and raise up an heir to your brother. But Onan knew that the heir would not be his, and it came to pass, when he went into his brother’s wife, he spilt his seed on the ground. And the thing which he did displeased the Lord. Therefore, the Lord killed him. Remember to use a carpet all the time (:-}) Frans
