Question:
am i correct in my understanding that if a catholic divorces and then remarries that he will ultimately burn in hell for this, and there would be no remedy after the fact? if one must divorce and does remarried is there any hope for that person to enter heaven while remaining in the 2nd marriage? are all the remarried catholics/noncatholics therefore doomed to hell, if for no other reason, because of the fact that they divorced and remarried? if one divorces, then remarries, then divorces again and remains divorced, will the level of sin be the same as if here were simply to have remained remarried? i know a man who is/was catholic and divorced 3 times! he remained married to his 3rd wife (a protestant) to this day…is he doomed to hell by virtue of the divorce? thank you.

I agree with you that the situation you present is certainly a moral delimma. According to CCC 2384-2386 (as I understood them), if the divorce was not your fault, you were abandoned then you can remarry but the person who causes or institutes a divorce and then remarries is in a state of permanant adultry (sin) and there fore would go to hell. But the ultimate judge is God who is not only just but merciful. So I believe the Bible when it tells us to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. In other words, in less you are in this situation don’t let it give you anxiety. Janet

Wow. Somebody’s got an overactive imagination! and there would be no remedy after the fact? if one must divorce and does remarried is there any hope for that person to enter heaven while remaining in the 2nd marriage?
Plenty of Catholics are re-married. If the first marriage can be shown to have been null and void, they can remarry. Several of the people in this group are in this situation.

The Church bases its teaching on divorce on what Christ Himself declared: Matt 5:31 MattL 19:7 Mark 10:4
