Catholicism Question

Question:

Hi everyone! Is there a good web site out there that enumerates some of the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism?  I’m specifically NOT looking for anything inflammatory or hate filled from either side, just something that is factual and educational.  Thanks so much for your time and help! Best regards, Russell

Best regards, Russell Russell, Protestantism comes in lots of different flavors, so you’d need something like Catholicism compared to Lutheranism (and there are varieties of this), Anglicanism, the Reformed Churches (Presbyterian, Christian Reformed), the Methodist and Holiness churches, the Pentecostals, and so on.  The biggest group of Protestants in the U.S. are the Baptists, although some of them claim not be Protestant, but pre-Protestant.  The Southern Baptists (conservative) and the American Baptists (liberal) are the two biggest, but their are a lot of other Baptist groups.  Have fun! The following link might help: http://www.eurohist.com/the_protestant_reformation.html

Russell! I found an excellent site today at work that is definitely a pro-Catholic site but had some great exposition on the difference between Catholics and Protestants.  Of course, the author’s intention was to show why he was a Catholic and not a Protestant, so it may be a little harsh for your taste, but it might also be informative of how we Catholics think of ourselves in regards to Protestantism. Unfortunately I do not have the address on me right now. I will find it tomorrow and email it to you.

Pete, I have a possible url on that topic from a Catholic point of view: http://ic.net/~erasmus For the Lutheran side, try Project Wittenburg (one of my faves): http://www.iclnet.org/pub/resources/text/wittenberg/wittenberg-home.html For a Reformed centered side (although there are Lutherans and even Baptist contributors), the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals has a site as well: http://www.alliancenet.org

Response:

Check out some of the Web Sites at: http://www.catholic-forum.com/links.html Certainly it will refer you to pages with a Catholic bent, but there are some good links to Catholic Apologetics

Gee. It’s "Protestantism comes in alot of different flavors" to respond to a sensitive question as this but, when it’s anything that is not Catholic, in other situations, is labeled as Protestantism. The Central Scrutinizer… Noticing people’s double standards.

Isn’t Protestant the definition of churches that split from the mother church during the "reformation"?  There are other Catholic groups that call themselves Catholic who are not in full communion with the Holy Father and the Magesterium. But this newsgroup ends with roman-catholic.  This is a single, fairly cohesive group.  Protestantism has hundreds of separate denominations each of them doing things a little differently. What double standard might you be referring to?  I think you need to "scrutinize" a little more closely. -Tony – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – <<Hi everyone!
