Question:
I John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will
forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." No reference to confessing to a priest or needing to perform penance or receive absolution from a priest.
WHY??????? Read Jn. 20. WHO is John telling us to confess to in 1 Jn.? Christ? Why not say so? i.e. "If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just…." No, he just tells us to confess our sins. Again, to whom? Pax Christi, Pat "For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires, will surround themselves with teachers who tickle their ears." (1 Tim. 4:3)

the Mantle of Mary) writes: How about a Hispanic Pope? Due to the increasing Spanish population,it would make sense since studies has shown that they will,in the year 2000,surpass Afro-Americans in population.
Another reason is a lot of Hispanics are
Catholic yet we are losing them to other *sects*. I have this *gut* feeling that the next
elected Pope will be….<gasp…a liberal.
Don’t bet on that. The reason that a Latin American Pope is probably NOT in the works is precisely because of liberation theology. Also, the ‘liberal’ faction is losing steam. Besides, no ‘front runner’ has won as yet. Every Pope elected has, to use a current term, come out of nowhere. No one expected JP 1 to be elected and surely JP II was a shocker as well. Pax Christi, Pat "For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires, will surround themselves with teachers who tickle their ears." (1 Tim. 4:3)

Why would I object to a black Pope? Why BAM, because as you should well know, the Catholic Church is the source of every evil in this world, including racism and patriarchal thought. Admitting you confess to a black priest is like admitting you confess to a homosexual priest– it doesn’t change your patriarchal church in the least. </sarcasm
Smile. Yes, of course you are right. Not long ago, someone told me on alt.feminism that the Christian church was the cause of the patriarchal system. HELLO?? I went to Mass at the University chapel. At least 60% of the people there were of African descent– we don’t have that many Afro-Canadians in our City– it’s mostly first generation Africans. Anyhow, in church, they would sing in harmony like you wouldn’t believe– they weren’t part of the choir or anything . It really livened up a dull, dressed-down mass.
Oh, yes! There is a connection between the school my daughter attends and one of the "black-led evangelical" churches in town. They bring their choir along about twice a year, and, once the kids found out that they COULD talk out loud, and sing out, and STOPPED putting their hands up when they wanted to respond to "Who do we love???", it’s GREAT!!! Huge smiles, thank you for reminding me of this!!!! (BTW, there is a programme where I work, which is primarily aimed at the laity, of theological study meant to provide links between the black and white communities. Each part of the course is team taught by someone from one of the "established churches", and someone from one of the black-led local churches. I hear that it is very good! I was speaking to the woman who coordinates it about evaluation forms once, and saying that we only got the usual, "very good, could use more videos, etc.", while she said *hers* often said, "Brought me closer to God!"). :) — janet Whether the angels play only Bach in praising God I am not quite sure; I am sure, however, that ‘en famille’, they play Mozart Karl Barth

I feel very sorry for those whose lives are so empty that they cry for attention by lambasting someone else’s believes. With that off my chest, and at the risk of being overly premature, I would like to entertain discussion of who may be the possible successor to Pope John Paul. Successor to Pope John Paul II? Bishop Joseph Bruskewitz of Nebraska. The recent excommunications in his diocese were practice for the big ‘clean up’ when he’s Pope. Stephen Patten

Name one pope who thought this. John XXIII actually WAS a great wit, but… 2. His humor is universally appreciated.
Again, how many popes do you think this applies to??? And what makes you think that everyone is laughing with BAM? 3. He is quick to point out who is on the express escalator to hell.
Again, name a modern pope who has frequenlty done this. 4. He will obviously be the first to continue the RCC’s path to ecumenicacism.
Can I suggest, yet again, at least a cursory reading of church documents on the subject? Especially as I have just suggested the same to BAM? 5. He has shown us his unique brand of logic in every post. Oh, you all are serious!?! Does John Paul II know that you are having a casting call for his successor?

Response:
The Bishop asks: Implied in the comment that "we only did it to appease blacks" is the assumption that the Roman Catholic Church is a "white" entity when, in fact, "non-whites" are the majority within the RC. So, who is the "we"?
Just the "white patriarchy" that all established organizations are accused of being made up of. BAM

Why? Honest question… If the Conclave were to have the courage to elect a non-white, non-European, why not a Latin-American?
Because they can only elect one at a time, perhaps? Or would this be perceived as some kind of tacit endorsement of "liberation theology"?
Geeze, I hope not. That would be to assume that everyone in So. America holds with liberation theology, which would be just a BIT of a generalisation, would it not…? +Bishop Tom Faulkenbury

There is a saying. "Whoever goes into a conclave a Pope, comes out a Cardinal." There was a news anchor (forget his name) who covered the elections of both John Paul I and John Paul II. In both cases, the ‘list’ of Papal front runners were way off base. Niether John Paul ort JP II were on the list. His remark? "Kinda makes this Holy Spirit thing seem likely." Are you Irish? For "Anamchara" means "Soul friend" in Irish. And you do use the word "Celtic". I will try to see your Web page. How do you explain the wish attributed to St. Patrick: "Ut Romani ita et Christiani sitis!" (Loosely stated, "that you may be Romans just as you are Christians.") Roman Catholics would like this to mean that we may be Roman Catholics. But maybe he meant that the Irish be part of the Roman Civil Empire?
Your questions are off the track of the thread and I do not wish to be impolite by interjecting my beliefs or using up bandwith on a newsgroup intended for Roman Catholic issues. However, if you wish to discuss this privately via e-mail, I would be more than happy to do so. +Bishop Tom Faulkenbury
