Excorcisms

Question:

Go to Father Malachi Martin’s Web site (sorry, but the URL escapes me – you can search under his name for it).  He has been performing exorcisms for years and he has written a book on the subject, "Hostage to the Devil." Jim Capaldi – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My fiance and I were arguing about how REAL these thing are.  I looked on the internet for something concerning Excorcisms…but there wasn’t much to be found under that title. Does anyway have information…or could you direct me to a site….Catholic traditions, beliefs included. Thanks in advance. Marya

Response:

I was watching an ABC special about possession and obsesion, that featured (briefly) a Catholic priest, and then later an ex-Catholic Bishop…which caught my eye. I believe that the devil is capable of many things….I don’t EXACTLY know what his boundaries are concerning obsession, possessing…etc. My fiance and I were arguing about how REAL these thing are.  I looked on the internet for something concerning Excorcisms…but there wasn’t much to be found under that title. Does anyway have information…or could you direct me to a site….Catholic traditions, beliefs included.

Dear Marya, I read your recent posted request for REAL info regarding exorcism. Yes, I do know a couple catholic sites dealing with the subject. Before I give them to you, please be advised of a few critical things. First, regulations state that only an ordained priest of the Roman Catholic Church can perform an exorcism and then, only with his bishop’s permission. Second, anyone else who attempts to perform the ritual, not only will it not work but, it will backfire in a negative way. There are people out there, involved in the occult who would love to use this ritual to its demise. It will never happen. Third, if you’re Catholic, I’d advise you to seek counsel regarding a healthy approach to studying the subject. If you’re not Catholic, seek counsel from your minister. No, I am not a priest however, I am a devout catholic with an interest in this subject. Having "stumbled" upon the web sites below, ended a year long search for the found items so, I know what you must be going through. As a side note, "The Exorcist IV: The Beginning" is a movie coming out late this year. It has to do with Fr. Merrin’s earlier days and his FIRST bout with the devil. C. S. Lewis, in his "Screwtape Letters" says, Satan’s main goal is to make everyone believe that he does not exist. The more you know about this subject, the more the demons will hate you and torment you. Well, more warnings later. Here are some sites: The Roman Ritual, a document containing the only Rite of Exorcism sanctioned by the Catholic Church, can be found at: "www.ewtn.com/library/PRAYER/ROMAN1.TXT" "www.ewtn.com/library/PRAYER/ROMAN2.TXT" It’s a large item; that’s why it’s in two parts. Look in the Catholic Encyclopedia, under "E", at: "www.knight.org/advent" For a good look at a comparison of Exorcism vs. Multiple Personality Disorder, look at: "www.jmahoney.com/exorcism.html" Also, for some actual case studies, go to any search engine and in quotes, type any of the following: "The Exorcism of Nicola Aubrey" "Begone Satan!" Just go to a search engine like "AltaVista" or "InfoSeek" and type in "Exorcism". The sites abound Marya. In the Roman Ritual, you’ll have to search for the Rite of Exorcism. It’s in part 2 but, the "Impramatur" is in part 1. Pay particular attention to the "Introduction" and "Instructions". I only have the Rite for purposes of reference and THAT’S ALL! That should be your aim. Study wise and cautiously. May God be with you… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks in advance. Marya Dear Marya, I don’t know any Catholic sites about exorcism, but I will fill you in a little piece of Gossip that I found out while going through RCIA at my former parish.  It seems that the previous year, our diocese exorcist had performed 240 exorcisms in one year.  That number was an increase from the year before.   It was slipped that Baptist ministers were contacting the Parish priest on behalf of members of their congregations wanting exorcisms to be performed. We were warned this.  Exorcisms should never be attempted by anyone except a priest who has been trained to do this.  Exorcisms are highly dangerous, not only to the body but to the soul as well.  And people are picking up devils from all sorts of places-the occult, going to psalmists, astrologers, bad books, and some of these strange revival movements. In the case above, the woman picked up the devils during a revival movement. Also, curses placed on people, performing seances.  Also sometimes God may permit infestation to punnish a person, to bring that person back to him. But be very careful. They are really scary!
