Ex-communication???

Question:

Excommunication isn’t part of Catholic dogma, it’s a disciplinary measure covered under canon law. These days, it’s relatively difficult to get excommunicated. Undergoing an abortion, or helping someone get an abortion, while aware of the law on this matter, would automatically get you excommunicated. Attempted assassination of the pope is another means to get automatically excommunicated.

I read up on excommunication prior to posting a response to this troll, and I didnt see the assassination of the pope as means to automatic excommunications. Where did you see this? Yours in Christ, CHRIS

Response:

Well I know you can excommunicate yourself by having an abortion. In Christ, Paul – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – How would one go about getting excommunicated?  What are the ways one would be excommunicated?  Would one be served with papers?  Does anyone have any Catholic dogma on this? Thanks Greg

What do you mean by troll? I was a Roman Catholic, and became a born again Christian.  I am still counted as a Catholic, and I was wondering how I would go about officially "resigning" from Catholicism.  From what you say below, it seems that I will always be considered a Catholic, although now I consider Jesus as the only head of the church. Thankyou anyway for your time in digging up this section for me. Greg. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – From the Catechism of the Catholic Church Section 1463: "Certain particularly grave sins incur excommunication, the most severe ecclesiastical penalty, which impedes the reception of the sacraments and the exercise of certain ecclesiastical acts, and for which absolution cnosequently cannot be granted, according to canon law, except by the Pope, the bishop of the place or priests authroized by them. In danger of death any priest, even if deprived of faculties for hearing confessions, can absolve from every sin and excommunication" There is a lot more information on excommunication at http://www.knight.org/advent/cathen/05678a.htm. For the most part, people excommunicate themselves by what they say and do.  Here are some excerpts from Canon Law: Can. 1398 A person who actually procures an abortion incurs a latae sententiae excommunication. (latae sententiae implies automatic) Can. 1364
