Mary Mother of who??

Question:

Did you know the phrase "Mother of God" was NOT used in reference to Mary until 431 years after the death of Christ. Jesus never called her "mother" only "women". If one says that she is the "mother of God" you are putting her before God and therefore actually making her God. Mary was simply the mother of the human body of Jesus. PeterT

Literalist hogwash. Jesus never called his mother woman. He called the Church "woman". You got to interpret those narratives. You’re not reading a history book. The author of John saw "His mother". Jesus saw the Church. Fact is in both cases His real mother couldn’t have been at Cana nor at the foot of the cross. "His hour had not yet come". Mary was simply the mother of the human body of Jesus.

That is if you believe Jesus did not have a human spirit like you have. A human being consists of a body, a soul and a spirit. That is what theologians tell you. There is a difference between the Holy Spirit and Jesus’ spirit. There had to be otherwise He wouldn’t have been a human being. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – PeterT

Of course.  Jesus wasn’t called the 2nd person of the Holy Trinity up front either.  It’s part of the development of theology of Christianity. Jesus never called her "mother" only "women".

You mean of course as far as any biblical records are considered. If one says that she is the "mother of God" you are putting her before God and therefore actually making her God. Mary was simply the mother of the human body of Jesus.

Now you are starting to figure it out, pt. And you know what, we don’t worship her either. duke ***** One day every tongue Will confess You are God. One day every knee will bow. Still the greatest treasure remains For those who gladly choose you now. *****

Wrong. In Lukas Evangel, Elisabeth calls Mariam mother of her Lord (A:43) And where from this (grace) came to me (so that) the mother of my Lord came to me? (Excuse me, but I am translating from the original Hellenestic script. I would appresiate if someone could post me a link with the official translation of the Holy Bible in English) in the bible Jesus never called her "mother" only "women".

Right. "mother of God" you are putting her before God and therefore actually making her God.

Wrong. As our Holy Bible teaches us, Jesus was from His Fathers point of view motherless, and from His Mothers point of view Fatherless. To answer if Mariam was mother of God, have to answer if Jesus Christ was God. Jesus didn’t left from heavenly while he came here on Earth. As Himself teaches us, He said "Father, make them be one, like you an me we are one" and another "My Father is inside Me, and I am inside My Father". There are many other points ant text where we can find documentation of the above. So the above is part of the dogma of Easth Orthodox Church. So, as Jesus was God during His presence on Earth, Mariam was Mother of God. This  specification of Mariam of course does not make Mariam God (at least not phrasally). As the purpose of everyone is to become in union with God, we become God through the Grace. Mariam, because she has already died, and she is at the right side of God, as Prophet David said, "Presented the Queen at Your right side" , she is alread God through the Grace. She is a child of God, the Mother of God, the Mother of Jesus, the legatee of God, the Sister of Jesus and co-legatee of Jesus. Weconsider her saved, and Saint and Holy and Virgin and Mother of God, and Theotokos, and we grace her with hundred of adjectives. Mary was simply the mother of the human body of Jesus. PeterT

Wrong Jesus was something more than human body. Like your mother is your mother and not the mother of your body, so she was the mother of Jesus, and also whatever was Jesus. If you are a taxi driver, your mother is the mother of the taxi driver, if you are teacher, your mother is the mother of the teacher.

Response:

Then why do you take away His important humanity by only calling Him God? Was not his mother, the mother of Jesus The Christ? He was not just God, but the Incarnation (what you called "whatever"), The Christ… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Wrong Jesus was something more than human body. You have probably misunderstood. I didn’t take away His humanity. Jesus was both human and God. Before his birth He was only God. After His birth He became human and God. After His death he left his body for 3 days and as God went to Hades. After His rise He became again both human and God, After His ascension He remain both human and God, taking this important humanity in His throne.

Response:

You are absolutely wrong. The greek word , theotokos, for mother of God was used as realy as 270 a.d. and probably before. Athanasius used it in his writings for lack of a better word.

Right, Elizabeth said "meter tou Kyriou", which is the equvalent of a modern Jew saying "mother of Ha Shem". — The unworthy servant of God, Stephen Methodius Hayes Web: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7734/steve.htm Orthodox mission pages: http://www.orthodoxy.faithweb.com/

You don’t know scripture: Elizabeth says in Lk. 1: 43, "And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" Now, what do you think a pious, faithful daughter of Aaron (Lk. 1: 6) meant by "Lord"??  . . . sounds very close to Mother of God to me.
