Question:
Psalms 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! Christianity as we all know has been under attack for some time now by many different groups. I believe the Lord is leading me to pray for unity among all Christians. A few months ago the church that I attend began a practice of praying for other churches in our area. Not the churches of our denomination, but all denomination. Many of us now spend our Sunday evenings attending Christian churches of other denominations. We do not attend for the purpose of sharing our doctrinal beliefs, but to learn from others, also to learn of their needs so we may pray for them. Through this practice I have developed a friendship with another brother of a denomination that is much different than ours. We do not debate our denominational differences, but instead look for ways that we may jointly glorify Christ. Our pastor has expressed to us that we should not engage in doctrinal debates with believers of other denominations, but develop friendships based on wanting to glorify our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our purpose is not to solicit new members, (our church is quite large as it is) to our congregation, and we have been instructed in no uncertain terms not to. Most of us ( myself included) have been guilty of engaging in doctrinal quarrels that just added to separation and ultimately served no good purpose.
