Nine more suits filed against faggot archdiocese

Question:

Many and many a year ago in a kingdom by a beach, a bully kicked sand in the face of young Charles Atlas. After much weight lifting, Charles later became Mr. Universe. Sand was never again kicked in his face.         Today, intellectual and physical weaklings flex their pseudo-biceps behind the cowardly cloak of cyberspace anonymity. The anonymity, however, doesn’t change the fact that they are weaklings and cowards. They are easily detected in the labyrinths of the newsgroups, where they talk tough behind pseudonyms. A talk those cowards would never do face to face. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – http://www.indystar.com/data/wire/out/1024ap_m9n3jco009.html Nine more suits filed against archdiocese By Bruce Schreiner Associated Press Last updated 03:18 AM, EST, Thursday, October 24, 2002 LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A deceased priest accused of taking a boy to pornographic movies and molesting him was named for the first time in a new round of lawsuits Wednesday against the Archdiocese of Louisville. In one suit, the Rev. Henry G. Vessels is accused of taking the boy to pornographic drive-in movies several times in 1969 and 1970 and molesting him once when the boy spent the night with the priest. The plaintiff is Roger D. Kelty, who was 12 at the time of the alleged misconduct. At the time, Vessels was pastor at St. Francis Xavier Church in Mount Washington. Vessels died in 1980 while serving as pastor at a Louisville parish, archdiocese spokeswoman Cecelia Price said. The lawsuit was one of nine filed Wednesday in Jefferson County Circuit Court. It marked the first time Vessels was accused of sexual misconduct. All nine suits seek unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. With the newest filings, 195 people have sued the Roman Catholic archdiocese claiming they were sexually abused as youngsters by members of the clergy or church officials. The plaintiffs claim that archdiocese officials were aware of the alleged abuse but failed to take appropriate disciplinary action or notify law enforcement authorities. Those accused of abuse are named in the suits but are not defendants. Price said the archdiocese does not comment on pending litigation. William McMurry, an attorney representing most of the 195 plaintiffs, said Wednesday that hundreds of other alleged victims are waiting to see how the pending suits progress. He predicted that another 100 or so lawsuits might be filed against the archdiocese within the next year. "I think as the public becomes knowledgeable of the coverup that the Louisville archdiocese committed, the outrage will bring them forward," he said in an interview. "The public only knows the tip of the iceberg." A Jefferson County Circuit Court judge recently ordered that the parties agree on a mediator to try to settle at least some cases, McMurry said. No mediator has yet been assigned, he said. McMurry said he was hopeful settlements could be reached in many cases. Predicting a total monetary amount is difficult because so many individual cases need to be resolved, he said. "The final tally of money paid in the cases … it will be significant," he said. "Certainly the damage done is catastrophic." Other suits filed Wednesday included allegations of sexual abuse against altar boys, a second-grader and two female relatives. Four of the suits named the Rev. Louis E. Miller, the now-retired priest at the center of the controversy involving the archdiocese. Two plaintiffs accused Miller of sexually assaulting them while they were altar boys. Daniel J. Schadt claimed Miller molested him while he was a seventh- and eighth-grader in the 1970s. Henry Asman claimed he was abused by Miller in the early 1960s. A suit by Patricia Miller Story, a niece of Miller’s, accused him of sexually molesting her in 1968. Miller has been accused of sexual misconduct by another niece and a nephew in suits against the archdiocese. Janice Mudd Grinestaff filed a suit accusing Miller of sexually abusing her at family gatherings in the early 1970s. Grinestaff was about 10 years old at the time. She and Miller are cousins, McMurry said. Miller has been named in more than 70 suits and has been indicted on dozens of criminal counts of sexual misconduct. Miller has pleaded innocent to the charges and was released on bond. Two other plaintiffs in the latest filings claim they were sexually molested by Brother Francis Dominic in the 1970s. Timothy E. Chesser says he was sexually abused by Dominic while a second-grader at Our Lady of Consolation in Jefferson County. Kevin J. Rowley claims he was molested three times while Dominic was assigned to supervise children at a retreat house in Minnesota. Rowley was attending a retreat when the alleged abuse occurred, McMurry said. The Province of Our Lady of Consolation Inc., based in St. Francis, Ind., is named as a co-defendant in both suits. The whereabouts of Dominic, who has been named in previous suits, is unknown. Records show he was last employed by the Franciscan province of St. Bonaventure in Chicago in 1989. Another new plaintiff, Kenneth J. Boehnlein, claimed he was sexually abused by the Rev. Arthur L. Wood for three years in the 1960s while he was 11 to 14 years old. Wood has been named in prior suits. He died in 1983. In the other suit filed Wednesday, Joseph P. Thomas claimed he was sexually molested in the 1960s by Louis Holzknecht, who was a football coach at Most Blessed Sacrament school. Holzknecht has also been named in prior suits. Price, the archdiocese spokeswoman, has said Holzknecht was a volunteer at the school and was never employed by the archdiocese.
