Well, to me it’s kind of complex. The worst possible enemy is the axis of Eastern nations. Some of his comments are to be ignored. But no world leader can ignore the bulk of his message. There is no way Putin, Jiang, and Bush, Powell, etc. can ignore Zhirinovsky’s statements. I stated about two weeks ago that Saddam and bin Laden might be as helpful to the US as they are a threat. I thought Powell would have noticed that possibility when he stated the US would contain and deter Iran. And lo and behold, Saddam is catching a few breaks more than usual from the US lately, as seen by Tony’s articles. As proof of Powell’s intention to prevent the Eastern axis or alliance, you might try looking at the following article: http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/05/17/us.afghanistan.aid/index.html Now we know that the US government let the North Koreans starve, but why is the US the biggest food donor to Afghanistan, when 95% of the country is controlled by the despised Taliban. Well it would seem to me that with the Afghan resistance being given assistance by Russia and Iran, the US is doing something not so strange, when you consider the strategy. Pakistan has been trying to lessen its ties with the Taliban, so that it can become good buddies with Iran, and Russia, in addition to China. The Taliban is kind of a millstone around Musharraf’s neck. So it might be a matter of keeping the Taliban strong (though they are harboring Osama). It doesn’t seem to be a matter of stopping the poppy growing. The Taliban was against that already, probably for religious reasons. Then on the one hand we scold Saddam and the Taliban, and on the other we ease restrictions on Saddam and feed the Afghanis. Saddam and the Taliban are arch enemies of Iran. And as long as Pakistan has significant ties with the Taliban, the former can’t get very close with Russia and Iran. It’s a strange world after all. Plus obviously Saddam was supported by the US in the Iran-Iraq war, to contain the Islamic revolution of Khomeini. Also, Saddam, when he became a threat, was apparently lured into a trap by the US State Department, as we have heard already; which significantly weakened Saddam’s military might post-Gulf War. Plus Saddam is being armed by Russia now, and he’s getting fiber optic help from China (the Huawei company has been busy in the Middle East). So Saddam is being played for a puppet by more powerful nations. the Russians want to use Saddam against washington as a distraction from their own alliance. The US wants Saddam in power in Iraq, to prevent the majority Shiites from controlling the government. That could solidify Iranian influence over much of the oil in the region (if Saddam were toppled from power). If Jean reads this, I haven’t done much research on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict lately. A lot of attention is being focused there already by very well-informed people. Anyway, that’s what I mean about Saddam being a puppet, and actually a dupe. I don’t know if this is all correct though.
